Idea for Energy? How can I get my idea off the ground?
-
I have a idea on improving our energy infrastructure. I can't go into detail of this idea incase someone copies it. I'm no expert on energy and not the best drawer/artist. So all I've got so far is an idea in my head and a basic sketch. I don't know whether the idea will work in the real world and someone else probably has thought of it but I've not seen it. In my head and on my very basic sketch it seems like it would work but I'm a leighman so I think I might go to the science museum or somewhere like that and talk to some people who know what they talk about. So can anyone tell me how I can get this idea off the ground - what do I do next and who should i consult? How do I go about it. If I do do anything more with this then it will be a massive project which i'll have to put everything into it. Thanks to anyone/all that helps.

Answer:
You need to talk to an electrical engineer about it. Find a reasonably close well known university, approach an engineering student, and offer him lunch (or, better, a hot date!) to talk over your idea. If it is feasible, there are many ways to protect it. The student is not going to copy your idea, he is WAY too busy getting his degree. A science museum is the wrong place for innovation, thats why they are called MUSEUMS.

Try HVDC in wikipedia. this is a great idea for long distance power lines and is desperately needed to deliver wind power in West Texas to the East and West coast where their are customers. As the cost of high power dc to dc converters falls, it may even be practical to use DC = direct current right up to the homes of people who own plug in hybrids and other electric vehicles. My guess is smart grid will never be cheap enough to justify it's rather minor advantages.
