Connecting a pc to a tv?

Need help connecting my sound from pc to my tv.?

  • I have a Emerson lc320em2 - I connected my computer to the tv via DVI to HDMI cable. I do not have SPDIF to DVI (never knew what it was before I started this...) - I bought as well, a 3.5mm to RCA cable to attempt to get the sound from my computer to my tv - (we're ditching dish/direct and going with netflix, etc. to watch tv) - I've tried settings on my tv, I tried two different sound cards on my pc, I've tried different "sources" on my tv (TV, HDMI1, HDMI2, Video, and PC) and I've even tried plugging my phone in just to see if it was a computer setting that it was having issues with. I havent another device to test the cable on and I'm only hoping that the cable actually works (purchased via amazon). My computers video card is ATI Radeon X1650 and my sound cards are 1) realtek onboard and 2) creative soundblaster live - I am lost, please help.

It sounds as though you've run the gamut of obvious choices. Your Creative Live is ancient, I believe, and will not support sound through the PCI bus to DVI out of your video card. It is possible to run the audio out, as you tried, directly to the Emerson but then your Emerson must have the capability of allowing you to "map" the RCA inputs to the HDMI video input. According to Emerson's "Connections" guide at -> http://emersonaudiovideo.com/support/connection.php , it shows an audio via RCA connection running in tandem with and HDMI/DVI connection, so it should allow remapping the audio ports to follow HDMI. According to their manual, audio (RCA input) follows HDMI 1 only. Do not bother with HDMI 2. Connect your 3.5mm to RCA cable to the bottom (red and white) RCA ports on your Emerson. run your DVI/HDMI to HDMI 1 input and it should be there. If it isn't, run the audio separately to a receiver (you have a stereo, right?) with alternate audio inputs and verify the audio is present at the phono jacks.

From what I know DVI to HDMI will NOT output sound(although there may be exceptions), what you need along with your DVI -> HDMI is a double ended jack cable ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/FPUK-metre-Audio-Sound-Cable/dp/B001DMEX5C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1333364487&sr=8-1 ), just plug one end into your pc and the other into the TV, they are really cheap. Once you do that, go to the sound control panel on your pc and change the output, you may need to test one by one to find the right one.
