Is BlackBerry OS 6 compatible with Curve 8520?

How To update my Blackberry Curve 8520 OS v4.6 to v5.0?

I have searched on the internet on how to update my OS and they seem to have worked on others but not on mine. I used that loader thing where you install the OS first and open certain folders. It's working perfectly but on the part where you choose the OS to update, mine did not show up only the applications that I installed. What's wrong with that? They said you need a plan for your sim. Is it really necessary cause I don't have any plan for my sim.
