How do you create a Custom HTML Theme for Tumblr.com?

So, I am customizing my Tumblr page... again! But this time, instead of using premade themes, I want to create one for myself. The only problem is that whenever I put something in the HTML box, my screen has nothing on it. I've tried the tutorial on Tumblr.com, but none of it made sense. So, can anyone find a website or answer that will easily describe how to make your own Custom HTML Theme for Tumblr.com?
