Can I custom paint my guitar?

How To Custom Paint My Guitar?

  • I'm a teen and my parents have no sanding equipment or any thing but i want to make mine a bit more unique. Can I just get some paint and draw on the guitar? If so what kind of paint? And if you have something i can write in mind please recommend. Something kinda funny like Morello's Arm The Homeless or This Machine Kills Fascists and any kind of design.

  • Answer:

Most guitars have many layers of paint used during the process so sanding the body would be something that I would avoid. A "top coat" of clearcoat is also used which sometimes gives the guitars finish the actual defining color. You can use stickers. These would be easier and could be removed or changed if you so desired. Honestly, if you want a really good custom paint job done you can actually get in contact with a guitar manufacturer such as Peavey or Gibson, etc. and they may work with you on oi. I built Wolfgangs for Peavey for a while and we would do custom paint schemes on guitars at times. The customer would send a sketch of the idea and we would form a paint scheme or two, send him a rough printout of the idea and go from there. Again, most guitars are painted in very technical ways with layers so be very careful if you decide to do this on your own.

Anything you paint or stick on your guitar is probably going to be difficult or impossible for you to completely remove when you get tired of it (which you will - don't forget that in a couple of years you'll be going around with a guitar "decorated" by someone two years younger than you). It will also destroy much of your guitar's resale value and make it hard to sell. There is really nothing out there that I would recommend as safe. Pro/semipro repairpeople have techniques that work a lot of the time to fix this kind of damage, but nothing is ever 100% certain. I've resurrected a lot of guitars like that after finding them dirt cheap at flea markets, but it depends on how badly they're defaced. @Harry, I think you may be too late ;) http://www.axeglove.com/AxeGlove-Guitar-Protection-System_c_35.html

Geez. Too bad they don't make T-shirts for guitars. (sigh.) Hey, now... wait a minute! THAT was MY idea... okay!?! @JCR, Thanks for the heads up. But I think this is more of a 'footie' than a glove. Interesting that one would go to such trouble though on the average as a gig bag (that would be a practical advertising surface) that fits well, or a 'sleeping bag' kind of thing that could do better as the soft, padded carry cases that have been already on the market as well. I can see that one can still have the (electric guitar) function. (For any acoustics? But that would become more of a muffler, right?) My Idea was for the sake of changing a printed logo, statement, or design that works with playing the guitar to be a visual as a T-shirt for ones chest front. The 'glove' reminds me of the stretch-over book covers. I have used these in the past. For books and manuals. Just thought of anything, that would discourage those wanting to 'personalize' a guitar to an extreme, that may not be reversible. What's next? right? Just fun stuff.
