I want to become a Screenwriter, where do I start?
-
Hello! I'm 17, live in Tennessee, love writing and want to become a screen writer instead of a novel writer... Well, I want to become a screen writer for Family / Children movies... Examples of the types of movies I'm interested in are Alvin and the Chipmunks 2007-2011 movies Lion King Kung Fu Panda Alpha and Omega Animations like this... Where do I start chasing my dream though? I just turned 17 and know that i do enjoy writing... but where does the film industry start I have no clue.... I also don't know HOW to screen write, i just know i want to be a screenwriter of any sort... My plans? I want to start learning and practicing immediately... I boght the book "Screen Writing For Dummies" After i complete it and learn how to screen write, i plan to look for free screen writing software just for practice, writing bullcrap ideas off the top of my head or maybe even rewriting the script of already made movies just to practice my immagination... After i feel very confident about my knowledge, i might buy a professional program like Final Draft and such... I plan to go to a technical / 2 year school for Information Technology for this is another interest of mine, and it doesn't hurt to have a fallback like this for a career if I just can't break through, right? Plus from what i read on articles, most screen writers spend 3 or more years in a different career WHILE breaking into the writing career... so this could be a huge help I plan to take some sort of online coarse and such about creative writing and film industry when i'm older and feel nearly ready to start chasing my dream so that way I have it down set. I plan to have 2 or 3 movie ideas ready to write and try to market when i hit california (I've always wanted to see it) _________________________________ My questions are... Am I on a good track? Are there any free screen writing programs? Is writing kids movies a realistic idea? Am i doing right to follow a second career in Information Technology to have a "fall back" point. Next question about writing... i noticed some writers are the type to rewrite already made scripts... Here's an example... Ross Bagdassrian Jr and Janice Karmen are the owners of Alvin and the Chipmunks, Ross even said in an interview "Janice is actually in the studio right now writing the draft for the next movie" But yet, for Squeakquel and Chipwrecked, the "writers" are listed as Jonathon Aibel Glenn Berger is there some sort of career where you are like the "Rewriter" of scripts? I know this was a lot but thanks for looking at this! I realize this is posted in other sections but I was really lost on where this belonged so I didn't think anyone would mind with me explaining this... Thanks!

Reading the "Dummies" book should be a good start. I also think you should take some creative writing classes or advanced English classes either in high school or college in order to better you writing skills, and some more specified screen writing courses if you can find them. Some places produce plays written by locals/students, so it might be a good start to try out play writing first. Good luck!

If you're a published author, you're much more likely to be considered. It shows experience. Screenwriting is VERY hard to come into.
