    J'aime les maths (or mathematiques? The last two are feminine forms. In general the masculine form is used. (Il faut être gentil, il faut être bosseur) The last sentence is correct, but I think "Il faut être diligent" sound better. That's just a personal thought though.

It is complementary to the other answer, but: Write "gentille" only if you're talking about a girl. For boys or many people of bth genders, use "gentil" , and add an "s" if there are more than 1 person.
