Degree in Biology and Gaming?
-
Hi! So my gf is taking a degree in biology and she is thinking about taking a informatics degree after. She always wanted to work in gaming development and stuff like that, but she is not sure if a degree in biology is going to be useful for that =/. She fears that no one will hire her having a degree in both biology and informatics. I have been doing some crazy research, but i can't find anything really useful. So is a degree in biology useful to get a job in gaming development?example:An artificial intelligence programmer should have some knowledge in biology right? =/ Please if you know of a similar case or happen to work in the gaming industry, let out some tips and stuff =D thank you =)

Answer:
It's not going to hurt her chances of getting into the game industry, but it's not going to help her much in the game industry either. Programmers are hired for their programming skills, and though a knowledge of biology could theoretically help her solve a programming problem of how AI should react to a situation, it's a stretch. However, if she's also going for a degree in informatics, that would be what helps her land the job; that and a strong resume/portfolio that shows she's spending her free time actively involved in creating work for the game community in some way. I've included a source page that has several articles about breaking into the game industry, the skills that are desired, and tips on finding work. It may shed some light on the types of skills she can emphasize to increase her chances of landing a game industry job.

I can't imagine a degree in biology helping for game development. Seems it would be better to have a degree in comp sci, art, or even english/writing.

I don't really know, but she could become a researcher on the effects of videogames on the body, like how people say videogames can turn people into killers, or even make them smarter and faster.
