Would you consider Information Technology a prestigious career?

You sound like someone who is more so looking for a career that looks good to everyone else and makes money than wanting to feel fulfilled. Could be wrong. Not insulting you--I was the same way, and it bit me in the @ss (i.e. I went to law school and couldn't get a job afterwards. Now I am in IT, which is what I should have pursued in the first place). IT might not be as prestigious as law to a lot of people, but I think that's because people BELIEVE that they understand more about what lawyers do and how much money they make (which, a lot of their beliefs are incorrect or incomplete) than what IT professionals do and how much they make. Personally, when I think about IT, I know enough about it to know that not everything is truly prestigious. If someone tells you they do PC repair or work at a PC shop or some place like Geek Squad, I know they don't make that much money and it's closer to working in construction than it is to working in law. Not EVERYONE knows that, though, so some people would be impressed by that. To me, networking, security and software development are and should be prestigious careers. My sense, though, is that more so than being seen as prestigious, IT is seen as one of those fields where it takes being REALLY smart or nerdy to make it in. It's like being a scientist of some sort...I don't necessarily believe people view that as prestigious, but they respect scientists anyway because they believe they're hella smart and know all kinds of weird, difficult stuff that they don't know. Understand that IT has many different specialties in it, and one might make you happier than another. I love doing repairs and it's very fulfilling, but security doesn't interest me in the slightest. My new job is in networking, and I don't quite know how I feel about it yet other than I don't love it as much as doing repairs.

With today's economy, I would think so. I would not limit myself to just one field though. Ever think on selling / investing in copper bullion?
