Diesel vs petrol - for first car?
-
I am learning in a Vauxhall Corsa 1.3 diesel. My test is in a few days so I am looking at options for cars. everything I have been picking out seems to be petrol - eg new shape Ford Ka, all the used ones I can find are in petrol. I had a bad experience with a petrol car - was really difficult to drive compared to the diesel (was still a Vauxhall Corsa) The clutch control was hard to control, when i lifted the clutch the car juddered, I was in 5th gear on a 30mph road. I just didnt feel comfortable in it. Now, I know that the car was damaged when I was driving it (instructor said she had just got it back after a head on collision at 50 mph) If I am confident driving in a diesel should I stick to diesel or did i just have a dodgey car as a one off, and petrol is something i will get used to quickly? so confused. thanks

Answer:
Diesel - prolonged engine life, lower cost per liter, better mileage, good resale value. Refinement is not so good. Petrol - lower engine life, higher cost per liter, not s good mileage, not so good resale value, but very good refinement

Head on collision at 50mph? That car would have gone straight to the crusher, someone's talking rubbish!! The car wasn't the problem, YOU were, a small petrol engined car WILL judder at 30mph in 5th because it doesn't have the torque (diesels have higher torque), so it's YOU that needs to LEARN HOW TO DRIVE, nothing to do with the car, and you're going to be spending far more buying a diesel, plus if you're only driving around town it's going to cost you far more in service and maintenance as they need to be run.

The clutch thing is nothing to do with diesel v. petrol. Diesel used to be cheaper overall. The way fuel prices look now, it's on'y cheaper if you do a high mileage. But all the comparisons are worked out on the basis of cars bought new, traded in after 3 years... That isn't real life for you and me! Hope that someone you trust offers you a well-looked-after old banger for next-to-nothing. Run it until it needs expensive repairs, then get another one. Insurance is going to be sky-high for a new driver - worry more about it being in a low group than about whether it's petrol or diesel

I'd say diesel, it's better on the environment anyway

I have had the first car as a Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDi with 105BHP (Diesel) which weight 1970kg and the 250 Nm torque pulled very well with heavy weight, the turbo was insanley laggy! Then I got a Vauxhall Corsa 1.3 CDTi 75 BHP with 170 Nm of torque and only weighs 1600kg. It is so refiened, quiet, the turbo is damn good, I easily overtake cars on country lanes and also the handling is absolutely on the spot as they have the vxr sport chassis and is biest towards handling rather than comfort. the corsa is good and pulls very well with a load of 5 passengers and boot full, however, the boot can be bigger. I'm a young driver and pay £65 per month under my mums name.
