What are a few historical high schools in Berlin, Germany?

The education system in Nazi Germany?

  • I'm writing a novel set in 1930's Germany that revolves around a wealthy, Berlin family. Their daughters are of school age and I have some questions about education. Okay, I understand that kids started school at the age of 6 and went for 4 years until age 10. After that, they had the choice of three schools, the 4 year, 6 year, and 8 year. The 8 year was the gymnasium and people that attended that school went with the intention of going to university after. But, women in Nazi Germany were discouraged from going to university, so would they have not gone to a gymnasium even if they were rich, smart, talented, etc. and maybe gone to the six year school instead (the Hohere Tochterschule)? And also, since my characters lived n Berlin, were the number of years at each school different? I'm so confused! Please help me!

  • Answer:

This system still exists in germany - after primary school you can choose between 5 years (Hauptschule) Certification: Quali, 6 years(Realschule) Certification: Mittlere Reife, and 8 years(Gymnasium) Abitur. Hitler did not want woman to go to the universities (german: universitäten), since he needed them during the war to work in factories to produce weapons and work on the fields. Women, who aspired after going to university were usually excluded from their friendship groups, since they were then not classified as real Nazis. Additionally every chid between 10 and 18 was send to the Hitlerjugend, which should be very good subject matter of your book. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitler_Youth
