What to do with $500?

I take Humulin R 100. Pharmacist gave me Humulin R 500. Had no idea what it was. Do I need a script for this?

  • Normally I walk in, ask for Humulin R And Humulin N and they give me the Humulin R 100 and Humulin N 100. I'm not too positive about the reasoning, but this time the gave me Humulin R 500 and Humulin N 100. The 500 is a much larger bottle and after the first injection I'm realizing that it is much stronger? What is awkward is they charged me for Humulin N twice and didn't charge for the R 500. I don't know if this is normal or a mistake but the Humulin R 500 seems a little more than I need or what I am used to.

    Humalin R u500 is five times stronger then Humalin R u100. The difference is that u500 has 500 u's of insulin in 1 ml whereas u100 has 100 u's of insulin in 1 ml. Therefore each 1 u marking on the syringe is really 5 u's of insulin. u500 insulin is for people with extreme insulin resistance, usually the morbidly obese or for people on a pump as a pump would then require less insulin, the pump has settings for u500 or u100 insulin. There are dilution vials to dilute the insulin to a more appropriate strength. It used to be a lot more complicated decades ago when they had a lot more different insulin strengths on the market. You need the prescription, not for the insulin but because insulin requirements change all the time with your weight, your diet and your activities, a Doctor reviews your glucose logs and recalculates your TDD, basal dose, insulin sensitivity ratio and carb to insulin ratios. You could get a Doctor at the free clinic to review your logs. If you learn enough about insulin dosing, you may be able to self administer but judging from your question and the fact that you actually tried u500 insulin before looking up what it is, I don't think it would be a good idea for you to calculate your own ratios. Go to your State government services office first thing in the morning, expect to stay all day, talk to a social worker and see what they can do to help. The US is renown for it's lack of public assistance but it actually has quite a few, it's just hidden from honest people who need it.
