Should I become a teacher or a nurse?
-
I'm about to be a sophomore in college, almost done with my basics, and I'm very torn between becoming a teacher or becoming a nurse. I've thought about it so much, and I just can't decide. My first choice for a long time was teaching, because I think it really suits my personality, and I know I could be great at it. For a long time, I was pretty convinced it was my calling. But the more I've read about it, the more I'm unsure. It sounds like much more of a demanding job than I realized, the pay is not very enticing for the 4-6 years of school it requires, and everyone keeps warning me that its hard to find a job in this field right now. Nursing was always sort of my back-up choice, but now its become equally appealing. The pay is much better, its easy to find a job in the field, and the advancement you can make with a master's degree (RN to nurse practitioner) seems really worthwhile. Both jobs sound challenging but very fulfilling, though I still think I would enjoy teaching a bit more and its more suited to the type of person I am. I just don't know what to prioritize? Any advice? Especially from someone who is either a teacher or a nurse, who can tell me a bit about what to expect from the job. Thanks in advance.

The answer sounds simple to me. You want to be a teacher. Then be a teacher. The money isn't great, you are right. And it may be a hard field to get in to. That said however, if its what you feel you have been called to do, then do it. Things will absolutely work out. The universe has a great way of doing that. Don't get me wrong, nursing is also a great calling, and I suspect there will be alot of jobs to be had given the aging population. However, life is too short to compromise. If you feel like you are meant to be a teacher, then be a teacher. Things will work out, I promise. Lyssa
