Why does the low ink light keep flashing on my epson 1400 printer?

I got an epson 1400 photo stylus printer for christmas 2010. It worked well for a few weeks until the magenta ink cartridge ran out. I replaced it with a refillable ink cartridge that i had bought because of how fast i was going through ink. The printer never recognized the new cartridge. I bought an epson magenta cartridge and installed it and the printer never recognized that cartridge either. I can't remember what all else I tried but the printer has been in storage for the past 6 months or so. I got it out today and the low ink light was flashing so i opened it up and it told me to replace the black ink cartridge. i pulled out the black ink cartridge and put it back in and it told me the magenta ink cartridge needed to be replaced. i pulled out the magenta ink cartridge and put it back in and it told me the black ink cartridge needed to be replaced. the ink cartridges i currently have installed are all refillable except the magenta because it evidently got thrown away at some point. I'm going to get rid of the printer and i would get more for it if i could get it working.

You *might* be able to get it working with a new set of cartridges but once an inkjet has been in storage for months, the heads could be clogged.
