What Electric Bike Should I Get?

I'm looking to get a bike for college? What would be the best type of bike?

  • I'm thinking about getting a cruiser bike because I love them so much lol I would be using the bike daily but for only for like 5 miles at the most. It's 1 mile to get to my building where classes would be held, 1 mile back to the dorm, and then I guess wherever else I feel like going. Everything is pretty close but parking would be hard to get since its the largest uni in the state, and walking is fine too I guess, but its easier to carry books and a laptop in a bike basket than on my back. The terrain is flat and in a very urban area. I want a bike that is practical. I want one that looks plain and would not be a target of theft, but I don't want a complete junker either. Bikes are not allowed inside the dorms so having to carry them indoors and such is not an issue at all. We have to keep them outside in the bike rack at all times and the university issues bike permits that lists the info in case they get stolen so the uni police can get them back. I don't know how reliable that would be, but whatever. I don't want to go to a yard sale and get a used bike there and get the parts because I don't know what I'm looking for and I don't know anyone that could help me fix the bike up because my mom and I are not mechanics at all. I would rather pay for a 50 dollar walmart bike than get a 15 dollar bike from a yard sale and spend 100 dollars for parts and junks. So yeah, what should I get?

If you'll be "commuting", buy a "commuter type" bicycle. The best deal on the market right now is a Diamondback Insight RS Commuter Bike from R.E.I. Comes in both the man's style & the women's style. Both links below. YES...this is more $$$. It is also a MUCH better grade of bicycle that will last for years to come taken care of properly. And it comes from the factory with fenders & a rear rack. Add panniers (saddle bags) to store your books & stuff while riding between classes. Get a good (and I do mean GOOD) U-Bolt lock and a thick chain or cable to lock the bike up. Several additional links below. Remember this quote & refer to it when in doubt...“The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.” – Ben Franklin

I would get a mountain bike. They are better for hopping curbs etc. You will come across many obstacles like that.

Get a cheap bike with coaster brakes. Brake and shifter cables wont last long on a cheap bike that is left outside all the time. Get something with aluminum rims, frame, and handlebars so it wont rust.

Just get an old 10 speed from craigslist/yard sale/ thrift shop, try to find one that is complete and free of rust. Then you should take it to a bike shop to get it adjusted or find out how to do it yourself (Sheldon Brown and Park Tool have excellent guides). Since you live in a flat area, you could convert it to a single speed if things start to break down, and they will since the bike-hater in charge of student housing is making you store it outside.
