How would you do this Math question ?? [GCSE]?

  • Mrs Jennings shares £770 between her two sons, Pete and Tim. She shares the money in the ratio of her sons' ages. The combined age of her two sons is 66 years. Pete is 6 years younger than Tim. Work out how much money each son gets. You must show all your working. ______________________________________... not quite sure!..:S tho thanks for your help..x

  • Answer:

    First, make a system of equations to solve for the age of each of Mrs. Jennings' sons. Combined age: P + T = 66 Pete is 6 years younger: P = T - 6 Substitute the value for P in the second equation for the P of the first equation. (T - 6) + T = 66 2T - 6 = 66 2T = 72 T = 36 Tim is 36 years old. P = T - 6 P = 36 - 6 P = 30 Pete is 30 years old. Make the ratio of Pete's age to Tim's. 30:36 P:T = 5:6 Make an x to y ratio of the money. x/y = 5/6 The sum of the x and y is 770. x + y = 770 6x = 5y x = 770 - y 6(770 - y) = 5y 4620 - 6y = 5y 11y = 4620 y = 420 Tim gets $420 x = 770 - y x = 770 - 420 x = 350 Pete gets $350

I am not really sure if this is right because I worked this out mentally and it is almost 1am. But better have an answer than nothing, right? :) Combined age of 2: 66years Therefore, 66/2 = 33 Since Tim is 6 years older than the other dude, 33+6= 39. Tim is 39. Therefore, 66-39= 27. Pete is 27. And then ratio of them two, which is 39:27 So, tim receives (39/66) x 770 = blablablabla And from there its pretty easy Hope that's helped and hope that that is right

first we need to workout their ages. devide 66 by 2 and you will find the mean of their ahes. now subtract 3 andyou will find pete's age. add 3 and you will find the age of Tim. pete: 30 Tim: 36 now divide 770 by 66: 11,666667 times this number by 30 to find pete's amount. times 11,6666667 by 36 to find the amount for tim. pete: 350 tim: 420 hope i could help. best answer please :P Good Luck

x-Pete y-Tim x+y=66 x-6=y x+x-6=66 2x-6=66 2x=72 x=72/2=36 Pete is 30, Tim is 36 Pete receives 30/66, or 45% of the money. Therefore, he receives 45% of 770, or 350. Tim receives the rest, 420.

x is Pete's age, y is Tim's age x + y = 66 x - y = -6 2x = 60 so x is 30. $770 × 30 ÷ 66 = $350 So Pete gets $350, Tim gets $420
