What is a CVT transmission and how does it help me?

Does anyone know how to use the cvt on a 2009 Nissan Altima?

  • So I have a cvt (Continuously Variable transmission) on my 2009 nissan altima sedan. I want to know how to use and if any of you nissan owner vehicles or people (who know what im talking about), can tell me what it really does, how to use it, when should i use, and what are the benefit of using it. the only benefit i heard was that it will give you a much significant better mpg. I currently, get 30.1 mpg on my 09 altima sedan (its a 4 cylinder 2.5 engine). Will the cvt help get a higher mpg or other benefits. Thanks and as always serious insights only.

  • Answer:

You are getting the correct fuel economy. Continuously variable ratios in the CVT allows the motor to run at lower rpm at regular acceleration. Then at full throttle where maximum acceleration is needed the transmission does not have gaps between shifts (no Gears) So CVT keeps the engine revolutions low and power evenly put to the ground saving fuel. To get better gas mileage accelerate very slowly empty weight out of the car inflate the tires properly wax the car buy low rolling resistance tires and speeds slower than 65 mph to beat the wind resistance. Lift the throttle faster approaching traffic avoid fast starts and stops and avoid long idle time. Drive different routes with less stop lights and steep hills. The CVT has a good coast when the throttle is lifted, no need to shift to neutral. Soon almost all cars will come with stop start technology for even better fuel mileage. Read your owners manual. Next oil change try Mobil 1 or other synthetic oil. And avoid cheap gas stations. Name brand fuel and fill up at evening or night. There are lots of ways to save that last 0.2 cents Good Luck

A CVT is basically an automatic with no fixed gear ratios. For the most part, you put it in D and go; there are six presets which let you "shift" manually, but you won't need these the vast majority of the time, and using them will not necessarily improve your gas mileage; you might as well let the machine do the figuring for you.

sounds like you are using it just fine. A CVT is a type of transmission, there isn't anything different that you need to do. If your car is moving you are using it.
