What is the best CCTV?

What are my rights as a student when my school uses CCTV?

  • What are my rights as a student when my school uses CCTV? I go to a fairly regular secondary school which uses lots of CCTV, Im doing a human rights project on surveillance and CCTV. What should a school do and not do in order to uphold students rights to privacy at their school? Dont ommit any rights you know of

If you haven't seen it yet, there's a great documentary on CCTV in the UK and in other countries Called "Who's Watching You?" that goes into the topic of privacy etc. ► BBC NEWS | Programmes | Who's Watching You? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/whos_watching_you/ If the CCTV is privately owned and operated, meaning it is run by the School and not a government agency, they can pretty much do as they please with the footage as long as what you are doing is taking place in non-private areas like in bathroom stalls, etc. I'm not sure of the laws/regulations in your area, but I've been told it is legal to put Cameras in bathrooms as long as the cameras ONLY show the "Public Area" and doesn't see into Stalls... So they can have a camera facing the sinks since in the open, public area you are not likely to be changing or doing anything that is legally protected. Some stores even put cameras in Dressing/Changing rooms to see if anyone is stealing... But they tend to have strict privacy rules about these cameras/footage since if a store were to have images of naked customers leaked, it might just put the company out of business. EVERYTHING boils down to what you or your legal guardian signed or read when you entered the premises... Just like how you are legally saying that you accept the Community Guidelines http://answers.yahoo.com/info/community_guidelines;_ylt=Asmo_I5Pg.bSH1Kj4u4PaWAazKIX;_ylv=3 and Terms of Service of Yahoo!/Answers when you use this webpage, both you and your parents agreed to allow them to film you when you chose to go to that school. They can't enforce an illegal contract but ANYTHING up to the line of Illegality can be enforced by the school since you and your parents/guardians agreed to their terms when you started to attend that school.

The cameras cant be anywhere like in bathrooms and stuff, and the recordings cant be given to third parties (law enforcement excluded.) It was likely in one of the things your parents sign every year during enrollment.

It's rather pertinent you get in touch with them directly. I or anyone else can say anything here...finding out from the mouth of the organizers, and supporters of that is most reliable...go to the context of your concerns, and they will undoubtedly arrest your concerns...

You must have a legal reason to object, if you can prove that CCTV somway infringe your rights then you will have case. But CCTV is there to protect you and rest of the school.
