Can anyone give me information on alfalfa hay and oats hay?

Why to give a horse for a treat?

  • Well you see, the question isn't that imple. He won't eat any of the following: Pitted Dates Raisins Sugar cubes Apple Carrot Sunflower seeds (with or without shells) Peppermints Molasses Original polo mints Bread Life savers (lol - I had to try) Peaches Cinnamon teddy grams Apple horse treats Peanut butter Jam Popsicles Grapes Watermelon Please don't suggest beer, weed, or catnip. (believe me some people have told me to try!) I tried a banana, he ate one piece, then I gave him another and he spit it out and won't eat anymore. I can't try hay cubes cause we don't have anywhere to buy them. I'm thinking I'm going to have to resort to a handful of oats, but even then I'm not sure if it will work. Also, when we were spreading a new (this years - fresh) hay bale for the cows, he ran up to the edge of the fence and starting sniffing and whinnying. Do you think I I brought him a handful of that sweet smelling fresh hay I could use it as a treat? Also - please just answer the question, don't ask me what I'm doing giving him treats, or tell me what I'm doing wrong lol. Also please don't say "never give your horse a treat it will make them aggressive and pushy - blah blah". I have lots of experience with horses. I just wanna know if anyone else has a picky eater that has found something there horse loves! Thank you!

  • Answer:

You already asked this question. If you want to give him a treat, maybe a small handful of oats. But if its for reward, just give him a good pat and say good boy.

My goat is a fussy eater, and goats usually eat the same kind of things as horses so... You can try some cereals, my goat loves fruitloops and weetbix. My horses like weetbix too. Also you could try a handful of some nice green grass that you could pick and give to him. Blackberries? 2 of my horses love them, i used to find them standing half way in a huge wild blackberry bush with juice and cuts all over their nose from the thorns. But If you don't know of any wild bushes (make sure they aren't poisoned) you can buy them from the supermarket. That's all I can think of at the moment. Good luck.

I am just curious. What kind of feed do you feed you horse? Could just use his feed as a treat. I do mine and any other horse I teach. Except I put it in their feed bucket when they have done good for me. But if he likes his feed then use that.

never give your horse a treat it will make them aggressive and pushy (by hand) Okay to be legit here feed him horse treats not things you find lying around your house! Carrots, apples, peppermints are exceptions. By premade packaged ones.

If you cannot possibly find any solids that he likes as a treat, try a likit in different flavours - respitory/garlic/origional and mint. It is just a little tub its good for his hooves and it can be used for the farrier and as a reward, respitory flavour my horse likes the best as it helps her cough.
