What do I need to record vocals to my computer?

What do i need to record the best vocals i can on my computer?

  • i have a pretty new hp laptop, dont really know the specs but its has windows 7. i am using the free recording software audacity, for now, to put my vocals on top of instramentals. it is metal music with heavy vocals so im going to get the shure sm57 and the x2u to convert it to a usb mic i thought thats all i needed till someone said i need a pre amp or it will sound like crap so i found a pre amp, E-MU 0204 USB 2.0 well someone then said something about a sound card but idk what that is or if i even need one since im getting a pre amp and not just running the mic straight to my laptop i guess what im askin is is the shure sm57 + x2u and pre amp all i need? will i need the x2u? and will the pre amp have a a sound card in it or do i even need one? im just looking for the best answer in this detailed question because i dont want to buy something if i dont need it but want what i do need for the best sound possible thanks

  • Answer:

A sound card is a seperate circuit board plugged into a PC that helps boost sound performance. But you have a laptop, so you can't add a sound card. There is one already built in to the motherboard of your laptop.
