What should be looking into when buying a motorcycle?

Looking into buying a motorcycle and need some input?

  • Answer:

SV650 is a great starting bike. It has enough power to get to about 130mph but doesn't have that kick that will get even experienced riders in trouble. Maybe a GS500 too. But you will outgrow that a little quicker. Just don't go any higher than a 600 unless it has a twin motor. Twin motors tend to be a little less "jumpy" than inline fours.

This gets said a LOT but I think a Kawasaki Ninja 250 would be a good choice for you. Unless your instructor tells you you are ready to ride a bigger bike, don't buy anything bigger than a 250.

Get a Honda CBR250R. It cost $4099 U.S. and has typical legendary Honda reliability. It's only been out a few years, so ignore people who say get a Ninja 250.

A used Yamaha FX6R gives both manageable power and sport look while giving a comfortable riding position. I feel it will give you the middle of all types of riding and allow you to develop what you want in a bike by making a list of likes and dislikes...then by a new bike that fits that list later after a year or so and sell the FX6R to another new rider.

I think a Kawasaki 650R Ninja would be a fantastic first bike. It has a comfortable riding position, it is a beautiful looking bike, it has an amazing engine with excellent performance, and it is cheap on insurance. Also it is a wonderful highway bike.
