Why is my ear discharge bloody?

My dog's ear has a brown-reddish discharge and he is irritated. The Vet is closed. Can I do anything right now?

  • So backstory: My dog just got groomed a few days ago. Today I've noticed his ear was very red and had a brown-red discharge and a very pungent odour. He is also running his body along our furniture like he is irritated. He doesn't seem to be tilting his head and when i touch his ear he doesn't move or anything. I'm just wondering if he is in pain though? Also the Vet is closed right now so I can only take him tomorrow morning. But is there anything I can do until then to relieve him of pain or irritation?

  • Answer:

It sounds as if the ear has a possible infection. Until you're able to get him to a vet, try to douse the ear with a modest amount of hydrogen peroxide. Try to keep the dog from ingesting it. Let the peroxide bubble for several minutes, then blot it dry. If possible, use a small amount of Neosporin and spread it very thin, so the dog will not ingest that either. There is a brand of Neosporin which actually has a mild pain killer in it. That might make the dog a little more comfortable, and stem the infection until a vet can see him.

No. In fact don't put anything down the ear until you know what's causing this. Phone your vet - they should have an emergency number available so you can at least talk to an expert, and take their advice, even if they don't see your dog.

Not really; you're describing a classic yeast infection of the ear; only the antibiotics from the doctor are going to treat the issue.

You could clean the stuff out of his ear. I think he would show some signs I he was in pain.
