Can i stay at my boyfriend's house in canada for six months while I go to school?
-
my boyfriend lives in hamilton ontario, and i'm going to go to school in buffalo in september it wasn't until like yesterday that I saw on the map how close hamilton actually is (i don't know why it never occured ot me, but I've always just flown to his house) but literally his house is just an hour and twenty minuts from my school I was origionally going to go to a dorm for my school year and visit him on weekends, but now that I see how close he is I wonder if I could actually stay at his house and I'd just drive to school every day like literally my traveling for teh week would be monday-thursday travel to and from school across the border adn then just stay in canada for friday-sunday like I know travelers from teh us are allowed up to a maximum of a 6 month stay, but wuold I then be able to say, stay at his house for six months crossing the border that often?or would they think it was suspicious or something that I'm staying at his house? I don't plan to use the system thing like this forever, just until I finish school (less than a year) and then use my degree to get job and a working visa to actually officially live at his house. any thoughts on how border patrol might be if they see how often I come and go? I'd stay int eh dorm room if I have to, but it'd be great if I could stay at his house and that'd save me like 5k from my loan

Answer:
Several issues: 1. You are free to stay in Canada for up to 180 days each year provided you don't attend school there. There is nothing wrong with commuting to the US for school... it's just not going to be terribly practical/convenient. 2. I think you had better double check how far away Hamilton Ontario is from Buffalo New York. It is just over 100km and about just over an hours drive on a good day. Border crossing routinely takes several hour at peek crossing times. The two main crossings are among the busiest in the world. Road conditions during the winter can also add considerable times as could any accident. Even if he lived in Niagara it is still two hours round trip. 3. The Peace Bridge is a toll bridge. Add gas and such and you are looking $25+ round trip not including parking. 4. If you are going to be crossing the border anything like that frequently you will need a NEXUS pass. Otherwise, after about the third crossing in a few weeks border services (on both sides) will be thinking you are either illegally working or smuggling drugs. For the first few times they'll just pull you aside, run the dogs over your vehicle, search you, and spend a lot of time asking questions. After this, they'll just ban you so you don't waste their time. 5. While you are free to stay in Canada, its services and social systems are not free. You may not enroll in a provincial health services plan as a tourist. That means no health coverage unless you buy travel insurance -- which few US companies are going to offer for months at a time and will be expensive. You may only use an out-of-province driver's license in Ontario for 90 days. You may not insure a car in Ontario without one, nor can you insure a US car without importing it into Canada -- a long and expensive task. You'll likely have problems maintaining your US license in NY without proof of residency and same with purchasing insurance. The fines for driving without insurance in Ontario are obscene. You may not open a bank account in Canada without proof you are in the country legally. This means you can't write cheques, every credit card or bank transaction will cost you a small fortune, and it won't be terribly convienient.

Well... I would say yes, you probably could do that with all the right paperwork. But man... 3 hours of driving everyday on top of schoolwork... I'm not sure how much money you would really be saving. That's like $144 dollars a week in gas alone.... if you only counted driving from his place to school for those 4 day, so for those 6 months its going to be $3744 in gas. Then you have to think about the wear and tear you would put on your car and what would happen if your car broke down. What if you and your boyfriend got into a stupid fight and broke up (it happens when people move in together) Take my advice instead of wasting your time driving 12 hours a week, get a part time job in the school library, computer lab or something else on campus that would allow you to read when you weren't busy... that way you could get paid to do your own homework and it would help you to pay off the loans... or reduce the amount of loan money you need later. Let your boyfriend drive to visit you... especially if he excepts to have sex.
