Whats Wrong With My Lawn Mower?

  • Answer:

Yes, you did over fill the oil. That's what causing the white smoke. Check the oil level stick and pour out enough to bring it back to full or as close as you can. You'll need to remove the sparkplug and clean it if possible & reinstall. If you are using old gasoline replace it now. All done? Then crank it up and get that jungle cut down.Which reminds me.When was the last time the blade was sharpened? So here are a couple of web sites with useful info on lawnmowers for you to read.

You probably did overfill the oil. Either that or you may have tipped it over and it may be flooded. If the oil is overfilled there should be a plug to drain it or you could just tip it over and dump some out...if is a push mower. If you check the dipstick and you know its over filled, empty some oil. If its not overfilled with oil let it run for about 30 minutes and it will probably stop smoking. If it doesnt take it to the shop.

sounds like your seals are bad. You may need a new engine or need to rebuild. I would buy a new mower if it is a cheep mower to begin with.

The problem with your mower sounds like the timing is out. That can happen if it shears the wooduff key on the crankshaft that locks the flywheel in the right position. Unbolt the starter recoil and undo the nut on the flywheel. With that removed you should be able to see if keyway in the flywheel and the keyway in the crank line up. It may not be sheared completely but enough to put the timing out. Getting the flywheel off can be tricky if you don't have the right gear. Suggest you take it to someone who can do it without damaging it. The key is usually alloy and is meant to shear to save the crank if you hit something hard and stop the engine too suddenly.
