Why do people go to college if they have no clue what they are going to be?

Why would they waste money on college? Why does society make it seem like you have to go to college to be sucessful? Yeah, jobs where you need to go to college earn more on average, but you spend more on college. It's like saying, "I'm going to waste gas and go to the mall and hope that I find something that's worth the trip." I'm ranked second in my freshman class and I am only going to college because I need to because I want to be a math teacher. I want to take only math classes and learn math, but I have to take unrelated classes, which I think is stupid. Why would you need to know history if you're going to be a dentist (or any job besides a history major)? One day in class, my teacher told us to raise our hand if we wanted to go to college. Everyone else except me raised their hands. Then she asked the class to keep their hands up if they knew what they were going to be. Over half the hands went down. So, how could you possibly know if you need to go to college if you don't know what you're going for?

Answer:
This is what is wrong with the U.S. Many people in other countries view us as ignorant because we don't value educations. We need to know our history, how can we moved forward if we don't know where we came from and how we got there. It's sad when 15% of americans over 18 can't locate us on the map or name the first president of the U.S.,or tell who is on a $5 bill. We need our history to have a better understanding of the world, we are already called stupid all over the world, we don't need to give them more to laugh at. Plus if you ever get on a game show and they ask you a question, you'll be glad you had taken that history class. Many people got to college to try to figure out what they want to do with your life, most people do not work in the same career their entire life. Your young and free, so why not learn more and then decide what you want to do with your life. And some people just go to school to have a good time and party.

Claus Moser: "Education costs money, but then so does ignorance." Martin H. Fischer: "All the world is a laboratory to the inquiring mind." Hang in there. Receiving any education is better than no education at all. Believe it or not, you are actually learning in those classes and they will come in handy one day.

Does knowing that they don't want to be a janitor count as having a clue about what they want to be?

Jobs that you DON'T need a college education for are getting more and more difficult to find. Plus, you're only a freshman. By the time you're a senior, the majority of kids your age WILL know what they want to do as a career. And not to be rude, but you will have a very difficult time finding a job as a math teacher. So YOU are the one wasting money on college. The ones who major in any part of the medical/sciences/business fields are smarter than you. They won't have a hard time finding a job and it will be well-paid. College is not a waste of money if you choose your major wisely. Which again, you're not, but if it's what you want to do then go for it. Colleges make you take all those unrelated classes so they can be sure that you have basic knowledge. You want to be a math teacher. Math teachers still need to know how to read. (English classes.) They need to be able to help students with personal issues. (Psychology classes) And even any sort of science classes will help you be a better math teacher because science involves math. Basically, college makes you a well-rounded person with a strong focus. (Your strong focus would be math, but you will still need to know how to communicate, deal with personal student issues, etc.) Although it doesn't seem like certain classes are related to your major, they often will make you a more knowledgeable person which will help you in your future career. College is honestly the only way to BE SURE you will have a good, solid future. It is not a waste of money and you should be grateful that you have the chance to attend a college.
