Can we break the Shannon capacity?

How high would a 500 person have to weigh to break an elevator with a weight capacity of 2500lbs? physics?

  • My friend and i got in trouble at college for slightly bending our knees in the elevator and they said we broke it and together we weigh around 425 bls. we are appealing and would like to know how high a 500lb person would have to jump to break the 2500lb capacity of the elevator. If you could show the equation and show all the steps involved, that would be great also. Thank you!

    Why bother with equations? Any elevator built to carry personnel has to have built in safety features, including a "safety factor" of multiple times its rated load carrying capacity. They are required to be substantially "fool proof" and "fail safe". Ask the college what the load carrying safety factor is!

that's ridiculous. F= m (v1^2 - v2^2)/2g v1= velocity before bending knees = distance over time v2 is stopped velocity = 0 g = 32.2 ft/sec but you aren't going that fast! use g= 5 ft/sec the elevator has safety built it to it.
