Answer:
Modern speakers are MUCH less efficient than older ones. Why - because the more efficient they are the more distortion they introduce. By making the suspension stiff and damping hard the range and distortion of the speakers is greatly reduced. To compensate for lower efficiency modern amps produce a lot of watts. The problem you are having with boomy sound is because the room is a bad shape and has a strong resonance peak at 225 Hz (and many others). You will not get great sound in a room that shape. Thats why speakers are not cubic - so the sound inside the speaker cabinet has little resonance. Rock concerts take place in large halls so the resoance peaks are at MUCH lower frequencies. All you can do is heavily damp the room at low frequencies, using heavy drapes spaced off the wall. YOU CANNOT IMPROVE THE ACOUSTICS BY CHANGING THE ELECTRONICS!.

1% of that much power is adequate for a 10 by 10 foot room. Your neighbors will complain if you put your speaker outdoors. Possibly you need response below 30 hertz. Changing the amplifier or the speaker often makes a big difference. You might try modifying your crossover network, if it is accessible. Some blankets or drapes on the walls may help. You likely need a reverberation device to get concert results is a small room. Neil
