PS3 out of space-- how do I use an external hard drive to help with this?
-
My PS3 does not have much internal memory, and I realized this when I purchased a Bioshock 2 download and found that the 4 games on there already ate up all the space. I have an external hard drive onto which I have backed up all my data, which I did using the PS3's back up function. I thought the next step was to hit "restore," thereby erasing the information on the hard disk and reading the information on my external hard drive, but it didn't do that-- that hard drive is still full. The only difference is I no long have any of my DLC. I don't understand what I did wrong, or how to remedy this. Is it possible to have the PS3 read game data-- not just save data-- from my external hard drive when it's properly backed up? The issue is that my PS3 has no more space, so I need the game data to be hosted on something external. If this external hard drive deal doesn't work the way I'm trying to do it, what's the next step? Thanks in advance!

Answer:
You have to format the EHD to FAT32 if it already isn't. Just google "format external hard drive to fat32" and you'll find programs that will do this for you. Windows' formatting program cannot re-format anything over 32gb I believe. But if your EHD is under that limit, you can just use the built-in Windows program (if you're using Windows). As far as saving game files and reading game data to the EHD, you cannot do directly. You can copy them, but not have the PS3 directly save it. The best solution would be to go out and buy a larger HDD for your PS3. Back up all of your current HDD information and then copy it to your new and bigger HDD.

My sincere sympathy although formatting your drive to fat32 is easy I can't forgive Sony for being completelyy shortsighted about this and other Ps3 issues, it seems the giant just won't learn from mistakes made in the past. My best advice would be to get a quadcore pc with windows 7 and HDMI graphics card and play, add, change any game/song/movie whatever you want to do. Best of luck!
