How deep/wide does a cut need to be to scar?

How deep would a cut from a knife need to be to leave a scar that will last many years?

  • Answer:

There are really no hard and fast rules, it often depends on how wide the scar is and how you heal. Personally I have a significant scar on my hand but the original cut was barely 2 mils deep but I have a barely visible scar that was over 2cm deep on my other hand.

It depends. When I was three, i got my hand stuck in a can and i still have a VERY visible scar on my finger with calcium build up. So, to answer your question, if you want a deep scar, do what I did.

I've found that shallow cuts scar more than deep ones through my life. I strongly suspect that's a result of not needing closure of shallow cuts versus having deep ones closed by stitches, butterfly bandages, or similar.
