Train ticket help please?
-
I'm planning to go to London on Monday with a friend but basically I'm from Chichester in West Sussex and she's from Bournemouth so I'm South East and she's South West. She has booked her tickets at her train station. I haven't booked mine yet. If I book my tickets on South East trains, will I still be able to get the same train as her as the ticket as it says I can only travel on South East trains? We're meeting in Southampton before hand then going to London. Please help me :-)

Answer:
For a start, you won't be travelling on South East Trains which don't serve Chichester. Your local train operating company is Southern Trains. You can book through tickets via any company, however. - that was one of the conditions imposed on train operating companies at the time of privatisation in the 1990s. You will, however, have to rebook if going to London via Southampton as there appears to be no through ticketing arrangements that way. You do realise, however, how much more it will cost you? A direct off peak day return to London from Chichester is £16. The same to Southampton is £12, and from there to Waterloo £39 (or £34.20 on a few trains). You would be far better meeting your friend at Waterloo by changing at Clapham Junction. (Prices are adult)

Yes you take a Southern London Victoria Train from Chichester . Change at Clapham Junction for Waterloo and meet your friend there; a good meeting point at Waterloo would be outside Costa Coffee opposite Platform 11. Chichester to London Clapham Junction/Victoria trains run every 30 minutes. It takes 85 minutes to Clapham Junction and then another 10 minutes to Waterloo www.southernrailway.com www.railcard.com

If you buy a ticket from Chichester to Southampton and then a separate ticket from Southampton to London you'll be fine!
