Handgun Laser Sights?

What is the difference between the laser sights that emit a beam, and the laser sights that project a single dot with no following beam? What are the correct terms for each? Advantages? Disadvantages? I'm describing the lasers you secure on the lower rail below the barrel, not the top sights for the slide. I'm looking for a single dot laser sight for my Springfield XD, but they all seem to be projected by beam -- any suggestions?

Laser sights project a beam of light. If there is dust or other particles in the air, the light will reflect off of the particles and be visible. There is no way to get a spot of light on a target without it traveling from the source to target.

Well for a start they are different things........ A laser vs. a red dot or holographic sight. A red dot Or Hologram is a image on a glass plane. Much like the Heads up display fighter pilots use.
