Power my passive subwoofer?

Does an aftermarket Car radio with Subwoofer output have enough power to power up a subwoofer?

  • i want to buy an aftermarket Car stereo for my car....i really would like a subwoofer, BUT i really dont want to run alot of wires for the amp...im not asking for really loud bass...im wondering if i buy a headunit with Subwoofer output, will that be anough power for a subwoofer?? ONLY one sub, like i mentioned...i am not asking for rattling on my trunk

  • Answer:

no. first off, a headunit has pre-amp outputs that only hook up to an amp.. you cannot directly hook up a sub to a headunit. you cheapest option is to get a small 10 sub, low powered amp, and amp wiring kit. and have an audio shop install it for you for $100

No. Subwoofer outputs are what's called a "preamp" output. Basically, it's an unpowered signal that gets sent to an amplifier to power a subwoofer. You can't connect a subwoofer directly to that port.
