How to hire a car near London Heathrow Airport?

Best way to get from London Heathrow Airport to the Big Ben area?

  • Hi, My friend and I are going to be arriving at London Heathrow Airport at 8am in July. We are planning on staying in a hotel near Big Ben/ London Eye (What is this area called?) We are trying to figure out how to get from our airport to hotel. We will not take a taxi or hire a car service because that is too expensive, are there shared shuttle rides we could do? or trains? Thanks!

  • Answer:

Big Ben is in an area called Westminster and the London Eye is just across the river in an area that most people call The South Bank. Trains from Heathrow get you into central London where you are based. There are two services . One is called the Underground which takes about one hour to central London and the other is the Heathrow Express , more expensive, and takes about 15 minutes. Depending on exactly where your hotel is, there will be a connection to an underground station near your hotel. http://www.tfl.gov.uk/ Use this link to study transport in London

Your best bet is to take the Tube. Before you travel, check your hotel's website to see if it says which is the nearest Tube station. I know that the nearest Tube station to Big Ben itself is Westminster. Take the Piccadilly Line from Heathrow Airport and then change to the Circle Line or District Line at South Kensington or Gloucester Road. The Circle Line or District Line will take you to Westminster.

Take the Tube- that's the London underground train service. There are a few underground stations right in Heathrow airport, in different terminals. So whatever terminal you land, there'll be an underground station right there. There are different underground lines. You will be on the Piccadilly line, which you can pretty much ride into central London. It takes 40 or 50 minutes but its way cheaper than a taxi and faster than a bus. You might want to get off at South Kensington and hop on a district or circle line train for a few stops to Westminster where Big Ben is. Look at the map to plan your route depending on exactly where you want to go. Its easy to read, the lines are colour coded and the stops clear. The tube is sometimes really packed but it is easy to use, a really effective way to travel around London and fun for a tourist in my opinion. Here is a tube map (0.53MB one zoomed in is best for looking at specific stations, so you don't hurt your eyes): http://www.tfl.gov.uk/gettingaround/14091.aspx Heathrow is bottom left. Good travelling!

You could take the Picadiilly Underground (subway) line from the airport to the South Kensngton station, than transfer to the Circle or District Line to the Westminster station. Your hotel should be in the general area. You can ask somebody at the Heathrow Underground station for more precise instructions, and somebody at Westminster can direct you to your hotel. Or even more sensibly, check in advance with your hotel and ask them which station is closest - it may also be on their web site. For more information on the "Tube," go to http://www.tfl.gov.uk/modalpages/2625.aspx

National Express coach services operate out of the Heathrow Airport Central Bus Station to and from central London (Victoria) and destinations all over the UK. The central bus station is located between Terminals 1, 2 and 3 is open 24 hours and is well sign posted. It is a few minutes walk from the terminals via underground walkways. From Terminal 4 and 5 you can catch a free Heathrow Connect of Heathrow Express service to the Central Bus Station. The travel centre at the central bus station opens from 06:00 to 22:30 and provides full details of all services. Another Option if suitable for you to take Heathrow Airport Taxi .Here are urls where you can find out all services from Airport .

Your hotel is in the Westminster area and will be close to either Westminster or Waterloo Underground (Subway Stations). It should tell you on their website For Westminster take the Underground District Line to Hammersmith. Then cross platform change to the District Line for Westminster For Waterloo takethe Piccadilly Line to Piccadilly Circus then the Bakerloo Line www.tfl.gov.uk

Your destination is in the Westminster area. There are THREE different rail services you can take - the cheapest and slowest is the Underground (London's subway - though a lot of this route is on the surface), which will take about an hour, and the one-way fare will cost you £5.30 if you pay cash, but if you get an Oyster card will cost £4.80 if you travel before 09.30 on weekdays or £2.90 if you travel off-peak (after 09.30 or at weekends). There are Underground stations serving terminals 1 & 3, terminal 4, and terminal 5, but these are DIFFERENT stations from the ones used by Heathrow Connect and Heathrow Express (there is no terminal 2 by the way, it was demolished some years ago, but it shared facilities with terminals 1 and 3). Then there is Heathrow Express, which runs to Paddington station - it takes 15 minutes from the station linking terminals 1 & 3, and a bit longer from the stations in terminals 4 and 5. It runs non-stop from the airport, and costs £18 if you buy a one-way ticket online, or £19 if you buy your ticket at the ticket office (and an extra £5 if you buy a ticket on the train, and an extra £8 or £9 if you buy a first-class ticket (and why would you be so extravagant for a 15 minute journey?)). London Travelcards are not valid on the Heathrow Express. There is also Heathrow Connect, which runs from the same stations in the terminals as Heathrow Express, but calls at 5 other stations on the way to Paddington, so takes about 30 minutes, and costs £9.10 one-way to Paddington (but if you buy a one-way ticket to Hayes and Harlington station - the first station just outside the airport, for £5.20, a zone 1-6 travelcard (£15.80 day peak, £8.50 day off-peak, £53.40 7-days) then becomes valid for the rest of your journey and covers a whole days' travel on the Underground network. It makes sense to get a travelcard anyway because you'll still need to pay to get from Paddington to Westminster on the Underground - £4.30 cash or £2 with an Oyster card.
