How will signing a W9 form for a temp job affect my ability to collect unemployment benefits?
-
I know this has been asked a thousand times probably but I'm gonna ask anyway. Ive been on unemployment for a while(more than 6 months) and I found a way to make some extra cash on the side. A teacher's union wants me to help canvass an area and get signatures to get an initiative on the ballot. They're paying me to do it and had me fill out a W9 form. The problem is, the job is only going to last like 6 weeks at the most. So after its over am I still going to be able to collect unemployment till I can find a stable position? Or am I SOL? I'm terrible when it comes to tax regulations so any information you can give would be really helpful. Thanks! Btw this is in CA

Answer:
Last I knew (which was a while back) when you did temporary work, you reported your earnings and your une ck was reduced by a formula (possibly clear down to zero) but the funds you did not collect those week(s) remained in your account, and so your une checks were stretched out into the future. At the time, the instructions were to file every period as normal, and when the temp job ended, there was no waiting period as une kicked right back in. Double ck to see it ^^^ is still the case.

you need to report when you are working. your benefits will depend on exactly how much you are working per week and what you earn. this doesnt have anything to do with taxes so im not sure why you think that is relevant.

This is not a tax question. This is an unemployment question. Direct this question to your local unemployment office.

You must report the earnings on your edd form.
