Water birth on Medicaid?
-
I'm 7 weeks pregnant with my first child. I haven't been to the doctor yet. I haven't even signed up for Medicaid yet...I'm not sure I even want to. I really want a natural birth and I have heard wonderful things about water births. Does Medicaid cover that? I'm not sure if there is even a hospital in my area that offers water births. If I go on Medicaid for all my prenatal visits, would it be possible for me to still have a water birth and pay for it out of pocket(if Medicaid doesn't cover it)? I live in Missouri if that makes any difference. Thank you so much to everyone else! You were all very helpful and encouraging. Crazy4Baby2-I had no idea you could have a water birth at home in a pool! That sounds ideal! And honestly would I even need Medicaid if I were doing it that way? I guess I would still need it for the prenatal visits. But I'm already planning to use a Midwife, I have been reading about them for over a week and it seems like they give better care and are more likely to encourage natural births. I have a lot of questions to ask them, but thanks again for your help! ^_^

Answer:
well here in california, a girl I knew through bradley class paid outa pocket for her unmedicated child birth (in water) and I want to say she paid 3,000 for all babies checks ups and after care. you can always contact a midwife and ask. you can have water births at home you either use a big bath tub or set up a lil pool in the house, you can either rent or buy the pools as well. do some research. I am trying for our 3rd baby and would really like a water birth as well. my first was a csection, second baby was VBAC drug free, so my 3rd I want drug free water birth :). I also heard its less painful that way. good luck hopefully you find what your looking for!

@ Sarah S- Jump off your damn high horse and get the stick out of your ***. You don't know her situation. Not everyone on state assistance is looking for a "free handout". It is there for people in need. God forbid anything ever happened to you and you needed it. What goes around comes around. Karama is a *****. OP- Ignore the ignorant Sarah S. She clearly is bitter. Any ways call up your local DHS office and ask them. They will know if the insurance you choose covers water births etc.

Contrary to what the last poster thinks, water births are not expensive. In fact they are one of the less expensive way to have a baby. One of my girlfriends that just had a baby thought about having a water birth but opted out and is on medicaid. I however did have one, private insurance. There are a few factors, you have to have a midwife, cheaper then a doctor. The hospital has to offer water births. In our area medicaid uses midwives because they are cheaper then doctors but you get the same care, if not better. Our hospital also offers water births. So this is more of a matter of location. I will tell you that if we had to pay out of pocket, it would have cost $10,000 give or take, just to have a unmedicated water birth. Good luck!

Whether or not you can have a water birth depends on the hospital; some have them available, some don't. A water birth isn't more expensive than a non-water birth. In fact, since you aren't having an epidural, it's cheaper.

i don't mean to sound rude but maybe did you think about insurance before you got knocked up? prenatal care is expensive and a water birth is also expensive, then caring for a child is also expensive not to mention after they're born the about you put out to pay for the doc visits and the shots. get on your own dang insurance through a job or something don't look for a hand out, or hey don't get pregnant in the first place!
