You're right, if you want to only be designing the spreads and dealing with layout then graphic design is what you would go to school for. You're going to have to work your way up to an Art Director position though. Some places require that you have anywhere from 6-10 years experience as a Senior Designer before applying for an Art Director job. Some colleges even have majors in Art Direction so that is another possibility, but I would definitely recommend majoring in graphic design because that is where you will learn the most about layout and design. Good luck!

You really need to talk to the lecturers at the college. They will know what is the right path for you based on your current skills and abilities and your future ambitions. As you are interested in the visual imagery of publications I would think that graphic design is a good route. A degree in graphic design should be able to cater for all careers that can evolve from graphic design so within your projects you should be approaching them with the kind of approach that suits your long term goals. Best Wishes.

Unlike what many people assume, there is a wide range of opportunities with a graphic design degree. I studied at Glasgow School of Art and since then people on my course have gone on to a wide range of careers, from the more traditional; art director, advertising and illustration/fine art to the slightly less traditional; stylists, interior design, designing for architects and myself TV presenting about design. I make sure the course you do has a good variety of modules and sectors covered so you have the freedom to try many areas and hone in on the areas you enjoy the most of. When I started uni I wanted to work more a magazine as an art director but since working in the industry have developed into other areas of design and now run an interior design company and present TV design programmes. The best advice I can give you is not to worry to much about what you plan to do in 5 years, study what subject you enjoy, and are good at and see what opportunities arise from that. Check out http://www.designcouncil.org.uk/about-design/types-of-design/graphic-design/a-career-in-graphic-design/ and pick the best course possible! Good luck!
