Over weight Hamster, help!?
-
So my teddy bear hamster has gotten pretty big and I am starting to worry, he cant even fit through his hamster tubes anymore. I have tried all i can think of, since he is nocturnal i take him out at night and put him in his hamster ball to run around but he just uses it as a bathroom the sits and cleans his face. he wont run around in it at all. i even got him a new cage and slacked off on giving him so much hamster food. but it doesn't help. Last night while I was out my mother said he was behaving strangely and she seriously thought he was going to die and kept him wrapped up in a towel in her room. He is still alive but I am very worried. I bought him a new cage and put in a fancy little hamster wheel and he turned it into a bed. He is over three years old. what can I do?

Answer:
He's old so you should probably let him be. Teddy bear hamsters do get to be the size of a rat with no tail. They don't fit through those hamster tubes often. Most commercial hamster foods are crap but its kinda late in his life to look into a good diet. If your food has a lot of corn you may want to switch or if it has a lot of sunflower seed you can pick most of them out.

Most Syrian hamsters (that's the correct name for a "teddy bear hamster") cannot fit through Crittertrail tubes. Make sure he has a 8" wheel. Reduce his diet a bit. Take out some of the sunflower seeds and corn because they can be rather fatty and incorporate more vegetables into his diet. A three years old hamster is an elder. He could be slowing down and for that reason I'd recommend, again, cutting down on his food intake. Because he's not exercising as much, he won't need as much food.
