What is a home theater?

Advice/ What to look for in a Home Theater System?

  • Hello, I am very new to the home theater area and I would like to start buying what I need for a home theater this summer. What I am looking for particularly is a site that can help me narrow down exactly what I am looking for in a home theater system. Obviously I am looking for a home theater system that hooks up to a projector, but I would also like to hook it up to my X-Box as well as any music devices through bluetooth. I would like as little wires as possible because I plan on making these portable. I as far as sound I am looking for the sound to be as if I were in a movie theater. I would like the bass high, sound loud, rich, and crisp. Also while I was attempting to find info on home theaters I ran across the following categories: 3D Ready, Smart Capable, Internet Connectivity, and Number of Channels. Would it be possible for anyone to explain what these things do for the sound systems? Thank you for your help, I do give thumbs up and best answers. Please dont leave any negative comments on this, please go troll somewhere else.

You left out two useful bits of info: A budget, and what general size of room you want to use this gear in. So, that makes it hard to recommend specific gear, though I can offer some places to hunt at, and some places for more info. I understand that you want to go at least in part, wireless, but that is a costly compromise, and the fact is that few wireless speakers are really of good audio quality. Rather, if you route the wires neatly, you can work them into the trim of the walls down low. So, you basically need a full range home theater audio receiver, if not more expensive separates, and a set of either 5.1 or 7.1 speakers. The point one is the subwoofer. Good brands to look at include Pioneer, Harman Kardon, Onkyo, Denon, and Yamaha for the receiver, and Polk, Infinity, JBL, and Energy for the speakers. Avoid Bose, they suck, because their spend all their $ on marketing rather than design and product quality. 3D Ready means that the receiver is able to process the full signal paths of 3D TVs and 3D BluRay players. Not really sure about -smart capable-, that sounds like a brand specific name for something with a different name with other makers. Internet connectivity refers to the ability to use a big screen TV or BluRay device to connect to the Internet; When using subscription services such as Netflix, this can be very useful. Number of Channels is simply about the audio channels in the system, basic Home Theater starts with five plus the subwoofer (5.1), which are front right and front left, plus rear right and rear left, plus a center channel (Much of movie dialogue comes from the center), and the sub. A 7.1 system adds two mid-rear channels, for more literal surround. Given that this is new to you, visiting some shops that carry this gear would help you, and I mean places where the staff knows more about this than at a Best Buy. There are also good online retailers who carry a lot of good quality gear, such as (gasp) Amaz*n.com and Newegg. They often have good deals, too, but shop around. Good hunting.
