How do I stop my laptop crashing when I use twitter?

I have a twitter but I've never actually tweeted anything because every bloody time I try to go on, my macbook freezes for a few seconds then shuts down safari. Any way of getting round this problem would be highly appreciated. And I know you can do twitter from your phone as well but that thing's about as useful to me as a brick window, so I'd rather just be able to fix whatever problem my laptop has then just use twitter on my phone.
