How do I take pdf files of scanned paper pictures and make them into jpg files?

Answer:
I like to use Irfanview for image conversions because it is one of the most powerful converters on the 'net. And, it's free. You'd open Irfanview then open the PDF file in your favorite PDF reader. Center the picture of interest on your display (as large as possible while still viewing all of it) then go back to Irfanview and select "Options -> Capture -> Start" and Irfanview will self-minimize. Press Ctrl-F11 and you will have the photo within Irfanview. Now just save it as a .JPG file (crop and save). However, your scanner should be able to save a scan as a .JPG as well as a .PDF file. You may want to recheck your user's manual to see how this is done since it will result in much better quality images than using Irfanview (or anything else).

Take a look at the scanner's documentation. If it's sophisticated enough to produce PDFs it should also be able to save to a variety of other formats.
