How do you convert avi videos to ones that work on a mac?

My friend has sims 3 and she's trying to make a movie, but all of the videos on her mac are saved as avi. Quicktime will not let her view them or drag them to her desktop to even use! How does she convert the avi videos to ones that work on a mac, or is there a way to update her computer to use the videos in the avi formatting? Thanks!

Have your friend install VLC for MAC OsX ( http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html ) and she can watch the videos through that player. It is FREE and far better than anything you can waste money on. Not to mention that it will decode/display virtually any video format.
