How do I make animated GIFs from movies?

How can I make higher quality GIFs via GIMP?

  • I have been creating GIFs lately but have run into the same problem that everyone else runs into. GIFs use indexed colors instead of RGB and when I save it makes the GIF look lower quality. I have tried dithering but it still doesn't help. I want to make them as high quality as the ones found on Tumblr. I was wondering how to manually index the colors and keep the quality. Are there any plug-ins or scripts that can help? I already have GAP and the plug-in that can read Photoshop plug-ins.

  • Answer:

All you can do is max out the number of colours when you convert to indexed mode before you save the gif. You need to start with an RGB image. Then click Image > Mode > Indexed > choose Generate Optimum palette, and Maximum number of colours 256. 256 colours is the maximum quality you can get in a GIF. It's the same in any image editing software (GIMP/Photoshop etc etc) because the quality of GIFs are limited by the format itself, not by the software used to make it.

GIMP already has a built-in capability to generate an optimum palette of indexed colors for a given image. Using this will tend to give you better results than using some sort of default palette. However, it still won't be perfect. In the end, GIFs are never perfect, you're still stuck with 256 colors.
