Is it safe for a female to travel Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil alone?
-
My friend(female) is planning to travel South America alone, yet she does not speak Spanish(do not speak at all) nor English( maybe little but she is not used to talking). she's been asking me about South America, where to travel yet i have no idea what South America is like because i never been to any country in South America. i been searching about south America for time and found it might be good idea to visit Peru, Bolivia, and NOT Brazil( but she wants to go there). my suggestion was to go see Machu Picchu, and salt desert, yet i did not search where she can stay around in the area. i concern is her safety. obviously i do not want her to be in danger after all i read about people getting mugged often. she is 23 years old AND SHE IS PLANNING TO TRAVEL ALONE FOR 10 DAYS! OMG... Questions. 1. Is it safe for 23 years old female, who does not speak Spanish nor English, to travel Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil alone? 2. In Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil. what area is the best for travelers to stay for their safety? Name of the areas most travelers stay will be nice to know. 3. Is English common in Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil? Is travelers have no problem talking to people? 4. Cultural difference might get travelers into trouble, might be in danger? i searched similar question in Google and one of the guide said there is some culture thing travelers should watch out for. give me list of things travelers should be careful of themselves. 5. Having vaccines before getting ready. Most important thing i watch for is her health after the travel. i do not want her to catch some virus in these country and come back sick. i read some traveler guide that travelers have to get vaccine for yellow fever in Peru. what els she should be watch for while she is traveling? 6. Any tips for travelers or where she should visit. Thank you for helping. It will be nice if you can leave more tips about traveling South America.

Answer:
1. Depends. In lima, peru; *Miraflores(clubs nice people, great food, all the stores you need, cheap cloth stores, hostels for backpackers, art, my favorite place), also Barranco( a lot of bars, close to beach, clubs, old houses hostels for backpackers) I RECOMEND YOU MIRAFLORES THO. and in Cuzco(which is another city and where machu picchu is) in the center of the city so you can go to the train station and take the train to machu picchu. I said depends because you just can go to any country and trust every single person you talk to right? This is going to sound bad but I'm peruvian and I recomend you to do not trust any guy or girl you meet, because most of people here who talk to tourist are mid low class and they may look for something more than friendship or being nice(money,a visa, etc) and i bet is the same with bolivia and brazil. About brazil..i went there when I was 15 and it was amazing i went to buzios and copacabana. I recomend copacabana better you a beach, parties, parades, nice people etc just be careful of robbers. 2.Peru: in lima: Miraflores / in Cuzco: center of cuzco. Brazil: Copacabana is really nice but quite expensive. Bolivia: no idea :( 3.Well in miraflores which is in lima a lot of people speak english. All my british teachers live in miraflores. And in cuzco for sure since is the No1 visited city in peru. In brazil in copacabana yes. Bolivia I'm quite sure some speak english. 4. *For everybody everywhere: Don't trust anybody not even if the person is beautiful. *Take care of you passport and other papers ALWAYS. * Don't borrow money EVER. * NEVER recieve a drink from anyone! because might have drug or some other strange substance. 5. Yeah, the vaccine for yellow fever is for brazil and peru. I'm not sure if it's only for people who go to the amazon because when I went to brazil I had to have that one. Ask or look for more information about it. 6. Peru is very beautiful she should stay here and go to Lima, Cuzco, and Iquitos. Lima: Miraflores, old houses, history, Caral(the oldest civilization in america, third in the world after mesopotamia and egipt), night life. Streets with history in Barranco. Cuzco(capital of the Inca empire): Andes, Machu picchi, pisac, saqsaywaman, Koricancha, great parties with cuzco's delicious food and beautiful dances. Aguas ardientes, Pisac, the stone of 12 angles, and More! stay close to the plaza de armas is safer. Iquitos(Amazon): Different food, nice natural enviroment, Amazon river, you can see the pink dolphins(animal in danger), waterfalls, Houseboats, an actual tribe in the jungle and more! P.s: Peru would be the best option to be honest I just told you this places because you enjoy everything in one country: Coast, andes and amazon. and peru is pretty cheap by the way :). Good luck!

I'd say it's not safe for two women to travel that region alone. Too many incidents where travellers don't come back after going alone.

Hi there, I am a male from California and have been travelling through South America for four months now (my 3rd trip to South America), and I have met a lot of young women your friend's age traveling alone, however, ALL of them speak either Spanish or English. Since your friend doesn't speak any of these two languages she'll have a very hard time to communicate, both with locals and fellow travelers. She will be pretty much isolated, and because of that the trip might not be enjoyable for her. Also, traveling for 10 days through Peru, Boliva, and Brazil does not make much sense. She would need a lot more time to enjoy these countries, In my case I have spent 3 months in Brazil alone and there are a lot of things I haven't seen yet. To make a long story short, I don't think that it is a good idea for your friend to travel along. She should find a campanion that speaks her language as well as English or Spanish.

Yes, she'll be fine. I've traveled that long alone when I was 19 and I barely new any Spanish! Ha! Is she Chinese or Japanese or French? In most of the hostels I've been to, there has always been someone that was Chinese, Japanese, and French during peak travel season. In 10 days she probably wouldn't reach an area that she would need a yellow fever vaccine, but it's alwasy better to be safe than sorry!

Female Travelers: There aren’t many problems as would be anticipated for female travelers to Brazil especially those on their own. There are no “social restrictions” for clothes especially in the coastal cities where women can dress in bikinis. So you should wear what you are comfortable with. This however may not be the case in the interior regions. Gender bias and stereotype is not common in Brazilian culture. Though women traveling alone can attract attention, there are a number of precautions you can take to assist you while on holiday. Travel tips: If possible carry credit cards instead of large amounts of cash. Though not many restaurants and shops cater for credit card transactions, you can withdraw money if you need it at some ATMs. Travel light, heavy luggage can be cumbersome and a hustle especially when traveling by bus. Tip hotel staff to take care of your luggage and hotel room. Do not walk around with valuables as women can prove to be easy targets for robbery. Avoid isolated locations and when you can travel with a group. Carry personal hygiene products for use while on the road. Personally, I believe that if you travel smart and are aware and careful, you should have no problems in Brazil -- It would probably be best to stay and visit places with a lot of people or hook up with tour groups. Have a great time! I love Brasil and think you'll find it a beautiful place with friendly people, good food, music and culture!
