What are the universities in Toronto?

Universities: Toronto or Queens?

  • So i got accepted into both universities for arts, and I'm still pretty undecided on what exactly it is i want to do, i applied for a major in sociology, but i know that has little to no job opportunities so I'm hoping after my first year, i'll have to figured out. I live in toronto so i guess the obvious choice would be uoft but i really don't want to live with my parents, i want to be independent and have the full university experience, plus i know that uoft is super competitive and it's really hard to stay in that school especially because the student to faculty ratio is so high. But my parents can't justify paying and extra $10,000 for independence plus they're really over protective and they don't trust me at all. I really want to go to queens but i dont know how to convince them to let me go. Anyone with experiences of either universities who can help??? Thanks so much :)

There are pros and cons to both unvirsities: Toronto: Pros- You'll be living with your parents which will save you/them money in the long term, UofT is less expensive tution wise then Queens. Cons- Large class size, you won't have your independence from your parents, a lot of competiton for jobs once you gradutate (toronto has a populatin of 2.5 million) in the social work field. Queens: Pros- You'll be living on your own, campus is a lot smaller, small city atmosphere. Cons- More expensive to you (renting out an apartment in Kingston ranges from $750-1000/month), you'll be further away from home (ie your friends) I currently live in Kingston so I can give you a bit of help about the city: Its a small city (120,000), its really accessible transportation wise (I believe there are 10 different bus routes in Kingston that will take you from Point A to B). Because Queens has a lot of people, homeowners tend to cash in by renting out buildings/apartments for Queens students at a discount you'll find a lot of homes neart the university are rented out strictly by other students. The nightlife is vivid, there are many bars downtown on Princess Street that are jammed on weekends throughout the year. My best advice is take your time and do some research on both univeristies before making your final decison.

Both are very good schools, you cant go wrong with either one you could always apply for osap. Try and convince your parents about the program at Queens and their reputation as a school, and the location itself. Also what you want out of your university experience.
