How is life in Israel?

How is the life in Israel?

  • I was in Belgium for past 4 years. Now I got an opportunity (temporary-maximum up to 5 years) in a very good institute in Israel (Weizmann Institute of Science). It is in Rehovot. I am planning to move there with my wife. I don't know how is the life there? Is it comparable to life in Belgium, France or Germany? The people there are cool? Is there any racial problem (I am an Indian)? Is it a safe place? I wish to get comments from people who have experience in Israel. Thank you.

First of all if you have an opportunity to study at the Weizmann Institute you should absolutely take it. Regarding your questions: - Israel is less advanced and rich than Western Europe - GDP 32K vs. GDP 45K - that is noticeable. But you will be staying in the center of Israel, which is much above the state average. - There is much suspicion in Israel against Arabs, but very little racism towards other ethnicities. - Are people cool? That really depends on your personality. Israel is culturally in the area of nations such as these: Italy, Taiwan, Argentina. Not very close to France or Belgium. People are very open and accessible, unlike Northern Europe, a little rough but not too much. - Rehovot is a pretty boring and basic town, but it is very close to Tel Aviv, which is one of the most amazing cities in the world. Certainly more interesting than anything you would find in Belgium. - As far as danger, forget about it - there is nothing going on in central Israel. If you decide to go inside the Palestinian territories, then you might catch some action. - The weather in Israel is far superior to any of the countries you mentioned. Easy winter, hot summer, perfect spring and fall, good light almost every day, not a lot of rain.

You'll be alright if you know how to catch bullets with your teeth and dodge bombs while walking on the street. Want some proof? Ask here, how many Palestinian missiles fall inside Israel all year round. Go on, ask that question.

I was in Belgium 3 times, twas a dreary grey place, Israel is unlike any of the countries you mentioned, let me answer you this way, People, some are great and some are not so great- just like anywhere else. The stereotypical Israeli is very straight-forward, warm and hospitable. They are quick to invite you to their families’ homes for dinner - and sincerely mean it. Israelis are genuine, caring, down to earth, and determined. It will be fairly easy to meet new people in Israel whether it’s through work or by going out or taking Hebrew Israel has an amazing nightlife! Cafés are full all day and night, and bars and clubs are full every night of the week. There are lots of gatherings, political activities, social action committees, etc. you will easily get involved as well. It helps if you happen to speak Hebrew, however it is very easy to get by without it. The cost of living in Israel is not high when compared Europe, basic food like vegetables bread and dairy products is very cheep, eating out is particularly expensive. Rent is disproportionately high as as are some toiletries. Israel is safe, and no there is no racial problem. Rechovot, is a laid back city, you will love it. First of all, Israel is much hotter than any of the countries you mentioned… maybe except for the most southern part of France. But even then there are parts in Israel that are hotter. It's also quite humid in the center and the shoreline. I'd say there's about as much of a racist problem in Israel as in any of the countries you mentioned, but not so much toward Indians. I also doubt you'd run into it at the Weizmann Institute. If you don't know Hebrew, though, you may run into problems. Israelis understand a little bit of English, but most of them don't know more than the very basic parts. So if your wife isn't going to work with you in the institute, she might run into troubles finding a job without knowing Hebrew and you both might run into communication and social problems without it. Public transportation in Israel isn't all that developed. There are busses, cabs, share cabs and trains, but it's very hard to get around them, again, without knowing any Hebrew. Most Israelis own a car. If you don't have a driving license, you better get one. It's not impossible to get by without a car, but it is hard, doubly so for a foreigner, I presume. In Rehovot itself there are large parts populated by mainly religious people. They're not bad, but they won't like it if you'll drive around their neighborhoods or play loud music during the Sabbath or any religious holiday.
