How to become a Cardiovascular surgeon?

How do I know if I can become a surgeon?

  • I am currently a senior in high school, but I have wanted to be a surgeon for a long time. But I have no clue if I am "good enough" to fulfill the requirements of the job. I know that I have the intelligence for such a demand job, I do extremely well under pressure, I have good reflexes. My question is, I don't personally believe that I have a good enough hand dexerity to become a surgeon. My girlfriend's mom is a surgical scrub nurse and she had told me after watching me type that I have a good enough dexerity, but I still am not quite sure. So, how can I be sure? And if I don't, how can I increase my dexerity?

    There is a lot more to being a surgeon than just dexterity. You can learn skills and practicing during training will improve your handwork. At this point dexterity should not be your concern. If you truly want to be a physician you need to concentrate on getting into medical school. You will need to get a bachelors degree and take the MCAT. Medical school is very competitive so you will need an excellent GPA and high MCAT scores. You will also need volunteer and shadowing experience. Medical school is 4 yrs and then if you still want to do surgery it is a 5 year general surgery residency. Good luck!
