What are some neat careers in journalism?

What do people know about careers in journalism/broadcasting?

  • Answer:

You have to be on fire when you go into your interview to impress the interviewer. You have to be ready to jump right on in, and depending upon the job, be ready to travel at a moment's notice. And be able to camp out for a few days, if nessesary, by living in the station's van, car, or whatever. Safety--depends. Usually it's pretty safe, unless you are a reporter in a war zone, or other dangerous area. Sometimes in riots, reporters are attacked. Now the hard part: job openings. Fewer and fewer places are looking for journalists because there are fewer and fewer newspapers, magazines, and spots on the televised news. PC news is still in it's infancy, it may be the new horizon for broadcasting jobs. Majors for those who wish to take their chances: some people go to college and get a communications degree (a batchelor's degree) and some take night school classes. Still others skip schooling and jump into the field--they have what it takes already. It takes a gutsy person to be a reporter, but don't be disappointed if your first job is to interview people at a gas station about gas prices. You have to start somewhere and if you do good, you'll get better assignments, so stick with it if you try it.
