What is a good grow medium?

What are some veggies, fruits, or herbs I can grow in a medium planter box?

  • The box is about 30" long by 6" long. It's about 5 inches deep. We have more than one planter, but this is for mostly for things we can use in cooking and feed to our rabbits. We're starting a larger garden in our back yard, and this would be on our porch. Also, what is the best way to keep things like bees, beetles, STINK BUGS!, and ants way without pesticide type chemicals. This will be our first gardening we'll be doing, but we're being much more frugal and I thought this would be a nice lesson for my younger brother. (A variety of options would be nice as well.) Thanks!!

You can usually buy peppermint oil spray at most garden centers - bugs hate it, it smells minty fresh, but it can be used near the house. http://www.midlandhardware.com/175-OZ-Aerosol-Poison-Free-WaspHornet-Bug-Killer_p_105658.html For a planter I would herbs - especially if you are going to have another plot - you only have enough room for maybe six plants in that box. Oregano, thyme, a few parsley, sage/rosemary would be nice. Edit: google "(largest major town) and "average last day of frost") to determine when to put out seedlings. Where I live (Detroit) we wait until the middle of May.

Hi my family has a Garden every year, i agree with the herbs that the person before me did, and i think peppers, if you want a veggie would be good for that size you could do sweet ones or even hot ones depending on what you like, you could do many different kinds, and just look on the back of the seed packet to make sure it wont be to big, on the back normally they put the size of the full growth of plant and how much sun they need ect.... well i don't think you'll want to get rid of the Bees!! because if you do you'll have nothing to pollinate the plants! witch means you wont get no fruits or veggies!! :-o hehehe..... for other questions you can google them on google.com . i hope this was some help have a great day!!
