What is your perception of or your thoughts on UC Davis?

UCR, UCSB, San Francisco State or Sacramento State?

  • Honestly, I'm at a lost on which college to go to. Any feedback appreciated! Pretty much my friends are all scattered and each college has it's pros and cons. I'm majoring in Economics/Pre-Economics and hope to go into the Banking/Finance world. I believe I'd like a college that has a social aspect, like the Greek Life And I'd love a college that I could do study abroad in as well. UCR has some acquaintances that will be going, but I've heard that there's really nothing to do. (same with Sac State), but I've also heard great reviews too. UCSB I've heard some great things, but again nothing's really stood out too me except that there may be too much of a social life here. (All-out partying isn't my style,) That and almost everyone that I know chose UCR over UCSB. But as they aren't friends that I'm certain I'll remain friends with I'm not going to disregard or UCSB or praise UCR over that fact. San Francisco State, I just haven't heard much of, but it's on the list because like Sac State is sort of close to UC Berkeley and UC Davis where my main friends will be going. (I know that seems sketchy, but my friends and I are really close even though we like never saw each other during high school because our schedules never matched up.) Lastly Sac is the only college out of the list that I've actually visited, it didn't seem too bad, but my older brother says it's really ghetto and from other people I've heard that the social aspect is lacking. I guess I'd just like to hear your thoughts. There's not one clear front runner for me right now. There's no big reason that's going to compel me to choose like financial aid, sports, or really good academic programs since Economics is pretty much in every school. Although if anyone has info on that major that would also help! Thanks for the help, I hope I was clear!

  • Answer:

UCSB is the highest ranked of the 4 schools and has the greatest resources. That should be your first choice. You can get some student reviews at collegeconfidential.com and at princetonreview.com, for what they are worth.

Don't go to UCSB. I'm going there next year, and I don't want someone like you who has obviously done no research on this great school to go there. Seriously, go with your friends to UCReject. I live in Riverside and I'm sure you'd fit in great here.

To be honest, San Francisco state is probably the worst of your 4 choices, as it is one of the easier CSUs to get into. If you're going there for a specific major, then by all means - choose it. If not, I would omit that choice. UCR is one of the worst UCs in the system, and is in a really gross area (Riverside). Personally, I would have no desire to be at the campus or the city. UCSB is going to be your best choice, but you need to NOT just attend a college because it has a great party scene. You need to really consider your major and which school has a better program for it - especially these days where the CSUs and UCs are getting their budgets slashed left & right. Sacramento State is NOT ghetto at all. If you actually did visit the campus, you would have scene how pretty it actually is. It is true Sacramento State has a lot less of a party scene than say UCSB, but the real fact of the matter is - college is what you make of it. If you're hoping to do something in banking or finance, I would urge you to major in Business Admin and focus in Finance, or stick with Econ. And for that, you would NEED to attend a CSU, because most UCs do not have a business program. I know UCSB doesn't.
