What are the universities in Toronto?

Universities: Toronto or Queens?

  • So i got accepted into both universities for arts, and I'm still pretty undecided on what exactly it is i want to do, i applied for a major in sociology, but i know that has little to no job opportunities so I'm hoping after my first year, i'll have to figured out. I live in toronto so i guess the obvious choice would be uoft but i really don't want to live with my parents, i want to be independent and have the full university experience, plus i know that uoft is super competitive and it's really hard to stay in that school especially because the student to faculty ratio is so high. But my parents can't justify paying and extra $10,000 for independence plus they're really over protective and they don't trust me at all. I really want to go to queens but i dont know how to convince them to let me go. Anyone with experiences of either universities who can help??? Thanks so much :)

I'm in my first year at Queen's right now, and know a few people staying in the dorms at U of T. :) Queen's is a really nice place, and seems to have a good sociology program (I'm actually in the intro course right now, but haven't looked into the upper year courses at all). I actually know quite a few people here from GTA, and a lot of them go home for three or four weekends each term. Would that help your parents be more accepting of it, at all? Transportation can actually be pretty cheap-- there's actually a campus-run bus service that often has tickets at discounted prices. :) Have you come down to Kingston to take a campus tour? Your parents might be more okay with it if they see Queen's for themselves! From the sound of things, you really are interested in coming here-- it sounds like you'd definitely be happier here than at U of T. Then again, finances are something that has to be taken into consideration. Have you qualified for any entrance scholarships? Queen's gives out a bit money automatically to all applicants with an average of 90 or above, and even more to those with a 95. That can help a lot. :) Otherwise, I'd suggest just sitting down with your parents and having an open discussion about what everyone's thinking. Maybe you could reach some compromises, like having to call them every couple of days to check in, or picking up a part-time job (there are a lot of opportunities on campus, which you'll learn about during Frosh week!) and paying for your own transportation costs. I hope this helps, and I hope to see you at Queen's next year! Best of luck. :)

Tell them that the grade deflation from U of T will negatively affect your future earnings, and that this will average out to more than 40,000 over your lifetime. Although I don't think U of T is great, its really not the end of the world if you do get in. Sociology at U of T is really not that hard, and you can still have fun at U of T, although you'll need to go out of your way to find the right groups.
